I went into that place on the corner of 12th and Pike, Chao Bistro, last week. It’s great!

The food is Asian fusion, I suppose. But the prices are good. It’s on par with Presse and Vi Bacchus (which has now closed!!!), only more pleasant. I will certainly be going back.

The atmosphere is nice, and hilarious at times. They have video screens in there that feature slide-shows of pop art, and almost all of the pieces they show on the screen are politically charged in some way. Everyone from Biggie and Kayne [sic] West to Michael Jackson and Obama. Weird, yes, but funny.

From the time that I even considered applying for Sophia University, information was hard to come by. The program liaison at our university didn’t know many of the crucial details to my questions. No one had definite answers for me about how much it was going to cost until the very last few months before I was to leave. Upon my emails to our Education Abroad office, I did receive a budget worksheet in October or November–the budget worksheet for Fall/Winter Semester 2009, the program my friend Luke was abroad attending as I first laid eyes on the damned sheet.

Information on the program was always loose, but never fast.

Another apparent dysfunction of our school’s study abroad application process was the fact that my old professor, the Sophia program coordinator at SU, was quite obviously afraid to ask any sort of questions of those she was in contact with at Sophia University. She was one of the three people that I knew for sure had some contact with people at Sophia, and (throughout the entire year I spent applying for the program) almost never gave answers to key questions of the program’s cost, or even the schedule and filling out of the application process.

But I shoulder a large part of blame as well. The decision of going and not going came down to about $5,000. It’s possible I could have paid for that if I hadn’t been a dick about working like I was a few times last Summer and Fall.

The point is that this blog’s no longer going to be about Japan in particular, or any trip I’ll be making there any time soon. Don’t despair–I will go back one day (at the very least to see my host family, the Hasegawas, who I will now miss devastatingly due to my lost opportunity of going to Tokyo). But for right now I’d like to write to you guys about some Styles. Some fashions. Some fashas.
